In A Daze
Lately I've been caught in the gritty reality of what is on everybody's mind, if not everybody's Timeline - the Oscar murder Trial. I've been waiting for the trial of this gripping story that has the nation waiting with bated breath for this crucial process to take place.
I've been hearing people say, "he shot and killed her! He should be jailed!". Which is not entirely the point, because if it was, there wouldn't even be a trial. See, the law is a very precise endeavour, and what we are looking at here, is not the fact that Oscar shot his girlfriend. We are looking at whether or not he killed her with intent, was it premeditated, to what extent do we call him a murderer.
If anything, this case is a real description of how dreary the court room is. It is nothing like how it's portrayed on Suits or Boston Legal.
And in the midst of the proceedings and chilling testimonies given by witnesses, the underlying fact here is that it's been made about the athlete and his career, as opposed to Reeva - who in essence is who we should be focussing on. How her life was cut short, and how many women around the world experience what she experienced. This is her story, and her story gets to be heard by the whole world. In a letter written to Reeva (in respect of her demise), Lebohang Morake, a friend of mine, speaks about the importance of feminism, and how we need it. I couldn't agree more. We need it, and we as women can learn something from this intense reality.
In the end, the truth will prevail and the pieces of the puzzle will eventually come together. And while this is in process, we need to keep in mind that it is indeed about truth and justice for Reeva.
Until then,
One Love.
Lee.
